Vona-project: Enhancing gender-sensitive and trauma-informed victim support in Belgium

Launched in January 2023, Vona is an EU-funded project designed to enhance gender-sensitive and trauma-informed care for survivors of human trafficking from non-EU countries. It’s implemented by the three specialized centers for victims of human trafficking in Belgium: Pag-Asa (Bruxelles), Payoke (Flanders), and Sürya (Wallonia).

Anchored in the Belgian victim support and assistance model, the project has a trifold approach: 1) direct assistance, 2) staff training 3) gender-sensitive capacity building.

By addressing these three areas, the Vona project generally aims to enhance the quality and availability of care and support for non-EU survivors of human trafficking in Belgium and promote a more effective response to this serious human rights issue.

Specific targets for this project are to:

  • Improve access to psycho-social counseling for 110 trafficked women.
  • Provide timely individual psychological support to 60 trafficked women.
  • Offer increased training opportunities to 36 staff working in the specialized centers, notably through a trauma-informed approach.
  • Enhancing gender-sensitive measures in the centers’ assistance model by establishing gender focal points.
